South Africa Introduces Digital Travel Pass to Simplify Entry Process

2025/09/20

South Africa Introduces Digital Travel Pass to Simplify Entry Process In a major step toward transforming global travel, South Africa is launching a fully digital travel authorisation system aimed at simplifying short-term entry for international visitors. Known as the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), this streamlined platform is expected to enhance convenience, speed up processing, and improve border efficiency—beginning with select G20 countries. A Modernised Gateway to South Africa Set to go live in mid-October 2025, the ETA system will coincide with the arrival of international delegates for the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This digital travel permit is part of a broader national effort to modernise immigration systems, reduce paperwork, and offer a faster, more reliable entry process for approved travellers.
What Is the ETA and How Does It Work? The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital entry clearance that allows eligible travellers to apply online for short visits. Whether you're planning a holiday, attending business meetings, or visiting relatives, the ETA replaces the traditional visa process with a faster, digital alternative.
Once approved, the ETA is linked electronically to the traveller’s passport and features a unique QR code for instant verification at South African border checkpoints. This not only speeds up arrivals but also reduces manual document checks at the airport.
Who Is Eligible for the ETA? The initial rollout includes citizens of China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico—four G20 member states whose nationals currently require visas to enter South Africa. The digital system will first serve G20 delegates before becoming more widely available.
There are two main user categories: *Visa-required travellers: Visitors from countries that typically need a visa can now apply for an ETA online. *Visa-exempt travellers: Although not mandatory, these visitors can also use the ETA to simplify and speed up border clearance.
Airports Currently Supporting the ETA For the initial phase, the ETA will be accepted only at: O. R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg Cape Town International Airport These airports have been equipped with the necessary infrastructure to handle QR-based digital travel authorisation checks.
Main Features and Validity of the ETA Travellers using the ETA system will benefit from:
*A validity period of up to 90 days *The option to extend once for an additional 90 days *Multiple entries during the validity period *No eligibility for employment, study, or permanent stay *Integration with Google Wallet and Apple Wallet for easy digital access *A secure QR code for quick border control processing *This digital permit is designed for short visits only and cannot be converted into long-term permits or residency visas.
How to Apply for South Africa's ETA The application process has been designed to be simple and fast. Though the official portal has not yet launched, the government has shared a preview of the five-step process: *Create an Account – Register on the official online platform *Biometric Capture – Take a live selfie as part of ID verification *Passport Upload – Scan and upload your passport information *Form Completion – Answer basic questions about your identity and travel plans *Submit and Receive – Get a response within seconds for uncomplicated applications The approved ETA will be issued as a downloadable PDF and can be saved to Google Wallet or Apple Wallet, along with boarding passes and payment cards. Important: Online Customs Declaration Required : Before flying to South Africa, travellers must also complete the Customs Online Traveller Declaration through the South African Revenue Service (SARS) website. This digital form supports the country’s move toward full electronic border control and is mandatory for all incoming passengers.
